- We’ve tested dozens of pillows, but Casper’s version remains a top pick.
- It’s particularly good for side sleepers who need a mid-loft pillow: it’s supportive, yet soft and fluffy.
- It’s also cool, convenient to clean, and priced well at $65.
When I joined the Insider Reviews team, I quickly learned that there are some products nearly all reporters and editors on this team rave about: Brooklinen sheets, Hydro Flask water bottles, Allbirds shoes. The Casper Original Pillow is one of those “hall of fame” items that multiple team members love.
It wasn’t until I tested 22 different pillows for our guide that I got a chance to try it out myself, and it didn’t take me long to join in on the hype for this pillow. Former Insider Reviews reporter and self-proclaimed picky sleeper David Slotnick hit the nail on the head when he described it as the “Goldilocks pillow [that gets it] just right.”
It’s not too firm, not too soft, and hits all the elements that make for a good pillow: it’s simple, adjustable, and easy to clean.
Design and specs
The Casper pillow is currently available in two lofts: mid loft and low loft. I tested the mid-loft version, but both pillows feature two-layer construction, which strikes the balance between firmness and softness. The inner pillow provides a foundation of firm support, while the outer pillow is soft and fluffy.
The pillow is filled with polyester microfiber and covered by cotton percale fabric, so it’s hypoallergenic and stays cool throughout the night. It also has a gusset, or an extra piece of material that creates a side panel, which adds structure.
Finally, the pillow is easy to clean: just unzip the outer pillow, remove the inner pillow, and throw both in the washing machine. Here are all the specs at a glance:
The Casper pillow is fairly lofty, which is why it’s a particularly good option for side sleepers who prefer the feel of a fluffy down or down-alternative pillow over a memory foam pillow. The gusset adds support and loft that side sleepers need to bridge the gap between their shoulders and the mattress, and the removeable inner pillow provides some adjustability if you find the pillow is a little too lofty.
I slept on the Casper pillow for many nights and found it really comfortable for back and side sleeping. I love that it’s a bit malleable, which makes it great for scooping, folding, and hugging. The only folks I wouldn’t recommend this pillow for are stomach sleepers — It’s too lofty for stomach sleeping, at least in the mid-loft version I tried. You may have better luck with the low-loft version.
The bottom line
I’m not alone in my love for this pillow. Ellen Hoffman, Insider Reviews’ editor-in-chief, believes this pillow is “a really nice marriage of a regular down pillow and a memory foam pillow.” And senior reporter Connie Chen claimed in a previous review that this pillow “combines the best elements that everyone wants: simultaneously fluffy and firm, comfortable, and a breeze to maintain.”
If you’re still unsure, Casper offers a 30-day trial window for you to test out the pillow and see if it’s right for you.
Pros: Soft and fluffy, gusset that provides support for side sleepers, removable inner pillow, machine washable, 100-night trial period, available in two lofts
Cons: Loft is not very adjustable, not as supportive as memory foam
