Master storyteller Stephen King (everything from It and The Shining to Misery and The Stand) is coming to Apple TV+ on June 4.
More specifically, Lisey’s Story — one of the author’s most personal stories, and a rare adaptation he’s written the script for himself — is coming. And, from the look of the trailer, hopes should be pretty darn high.
Check out the trailer below.
Lisey’s Story is based on a 2006 Stephen King novel about the widow of a famous writer (in a Stephen King novel?) who discovered a passageway to a parallel dimension which helped inspire his work. The Simon & Schuster description of the book reads:
“Lisey lost her husband Scott two years ago, after a twenty-five year marriage of profound and sometimes frightening intimacy. Scott was an award-winning, bestselling novelist and a very complicated man. Early in their relationship, before they married, Lisey knew there was a place Scott went — a place that both terrified and healed him, could eat him alive or give him the ideas he needed in order to live. Now it’s Lisey’s turn to face Scott’s demons, to go to that terrifying place known as Boo’ya Moon.”
A personal story for Stephen King
Stephen King has called Lisey’s Story the most personal story of his long career. It is inspired by his 50-year marriage to novelist Tabitha King, along with real-life brushes with death and some unsettling stalker experiences.
King is the rare popular author who has continued to stay on top of his game over a long career. Not only are his newer books able to match his old ones in terms of originality; in some cases his novels from this century are his best. While movie and TV adaptations are a bit more mixed, there have been some classics over the years — from Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining to Rob Reiner’s Misery. It’s unlikely that too many adaptations can reach these heights. But the combination of a hands-on Stephen King and Apple’s high quality control make me very optimistic.
